This portal is designed to guide you through the process of applying for a permit to acquire a firearm in Maui County. By staying informed, complying with state and federal laws, and practicing safe firearm handling, you help uphold the values of responsibility and respect that define our island community.

This is an official application for a State of Hawai‘i Permit to Acquire a Firearm. To be considered for a Permit to Acquire, the application must be fully and accurately completed. Please ensure that all required documents are uploaded before submitting your application. Be aware that intentionally providing false or misleading information on your application is a criminal offense and will result in the denial of your permit request and could result in criminal proceedings.

Permit to Acquire a Firearm applications may be submitted in one of the following ways:
- Online through this service;
- In person at the Records Section of the Maui Police Department in Wailuku; or
- In person at the Lāna‘i and Moloka‘i police stations.
Please review all information carefully before submitting your application. Incomplete applications will not be accepted or processed.
Prior to Filling Out This Application Be Prepared to:
Upload the following documents with your application:
- your current State of Hawaii Driver’s License or Hawaii State ID;
- proof of U.S. citizenship or legal status in the form of:
- U.S.-issued birth certificate;
- Valid U.S. Passport;
- Original Naturalization Certificate (if you are a naturalized citizen);
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad (if you are a US citizen born abroad);
- Valid Lawful Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551); or
- Proof of COFA migrant status (if applicable): (I-94 so noted) and unexpired passport from Micronesia, Marshall Islands, or Palau;
- For long gun permits: Hawai‘i Hunter Education card (issued within the last 4 years);
- For handgun permits: Proof of handgun safety training completed within the last 4 years, as required by HRS §134-2;
- A signed affidavit verifying successful completion of firearm training provided by a qualified firearms instructor. Click here for MPD's list of qualified firearm instructors.
- A signed Mental Health waiver - Authorization for Use or Disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI)
- Be prepared to pay the Fingerprinting Fee of $42.00 and to be fingerprinted at one of the locations below.
- If you are a first time Permit to Acquire applicant in Maui County or if you have not renewed a permit after December 4, 2016, you will need to be fingerprinted as part of the application process;
- You may pay online with debit or credit card through this service; or
- Submit a cashier’s check or money order for the exact amount of $42.00 made payable to the County of Maui, Department of Finance;
- You will also be required to complete, sign and submit the Fingerprint Consent & Notification form.
If you are under 25 years of age, you are required to complete, sign and submit the Authorization for Release of Information of Juvenile Records.
Firearms Applicant Fingerprint processing can be completed at:
- Maui Police Department, Wailuku Receiving Desk, M-F 0745am to 4:30pm.
- Lāna‘i Police Station – contact for best hours
- Moloka‘i Police Station – contact for best hours
- Bring your printed receipt and photo identification
Note: If you've paid a firearms fingerprint fee in Maui County on or after Dec. 4, 2016, no additional fee or fingerprints are required. This status will be confirmed for you by our staff after submission of your application. If fingerprints are required, you must complete fingerprinting within 5 working days or application will become VOID.
Application/Step 1
- Thoroughly and accurately complete all forms and upload all required documents
- complete payment as needed,
- SUBMIT your application.
Application/Step 2
After you submit your application:
- Application status in the system will update as it moves through the review/approval process
- You will be notified of important status changes in your application (ex. submitted, pending, approved or denied).
- If applicable, you’ll receive fingerprinting availability date & time details.
- If we need additional documents, we’ll notify you via email.
- Please allow between 14 to 40 calendar days for processing.
Application/Step 3
Decision
- If your application is approved, you will be notified and application status will update appropriately
- You must pick up your permit from MPD within 14 days of approval.
- Failure to pick your permit up on time will result in its cancellation.
- If your permit is canceled, you must reapply and wait up to 40 more days as the background check restarts
- Upon issuance, long gun (rifle/shotgun) permits will be valid for one calendar year
- Upon issuance, a pistol permit will be valid for 30 days, and only for the transaction described on the permit.
- If denied, your application status will update and you will receive a certified letter stating denial reasons as well as
appeal process instructions. - Please return expired permits in your possession to MPD Records Section staff as soon as possible.
